Every year, millions of individuals worldwide undergo surgical procedures, each of which play a significant role in shaping their health outcomes. Through our interactive visualizations, we want to find out... how does age influence what operations we undergo? How do surgical positions change how we experience surgery? And what factors make for a long/short surgery?
Here, it's clear to see that different operations (and operations in general) are more common at different ages. While younger patients mostly undergo minor resections, vascular operations, and transplantations, older individuals undergo higher frequencies of procedures such as biliary/pancreatic, colorectal, breast, and stomach (while also making up the vast majority of surgeries in our dataset).
Here, we can see that operation, case, and anaesthesia duration vary wildly depending on the positions in which we're operated on. For instance, prone surgeries are consistently the shortest in all three metrics, while kidney-position surgeries are consistently middle of the pack. Try exploring some others!
